White brightness and colour brightness measure two different things, and the gap between them is why a projector can post a big lumen number yet still look dim and washed out on real, colourful footage. White brightness — the usual ANSI lumen figure — is read off a full-white image; colour brightness, properly called Colour Light Output (CLO), sums the red, green and blue output separately, following section 15.4 of the Information Display Measurements Standard. On a 3LCD projector the two figures come out essentially equal; on many single-chip DLP projectors that use a white or clear segment in the colour wheel to inflate the headline number, measured colour brightness can fall to roughly a third — sometimes barely a fifth — of the white figure. That is the spec most listings quietly leave off, so the honest move is to ask for both numbers, not just the bigger one.

What colour brightness actually measures

If you have already worked through how many ANSI lumens you actually need, you know the standard brightness figure is taken by reading a full-white test pattern at nine points across the screen, averaging them and multiplying by the screen area. Colour Light Output uses the same nine-point grid, but instead of one white reading it takes a red, green and blue reading at each point and adds them together. Because red plus green plus blue is what makes white, a projector whose colours are as bright as its white will score the same on both tests. It was standardised in 2012 by the International Committee for Display Metrology (part of the Society for Information Display, with VESA) — a genuine standard, not a marketing invention.

Why single-chip designs can read low on colour

Here is where the two figures pull apart. A single-chip DLP projector builds colour by spinning a wheel of filters in front of one chip, flashing red, green and blue in sequence fast enough that your eye blends them. To lift the headline brightness, many wheels add a clear or white segment: when it is in play, largely unfiltered light floods the screen and the white figure climbs. The catch is that this extra white light lands on colours too, and too much white added to a primary drags it towards a pale, pastel version of itself — most visibly in the bright parts of an image.

The upshot: impressive on a spreadsheet and a white slide, muted on a saturated film. Independent testing bears this out: single-chip models have been measured delivering colour light output of only around a fifth of their white figure in the brightest mode, and across the market the colour-to-white ratio ranges from about a fifth to over four-fifths depending on model and picture mode. A common rule of thumb puts a typical single-chip colour figure at up to a third of the white one — which is exactly why the designs that keep the two equal make a point of measuring and quoting both.

Where LED light engines — and our own honesty — fit in

Not every projector uses a spinning wheel. LED light engines can drive red, green and blue directly, switching between them electronically with no white-boosting segment in the path — one reason RGB-LED designs keep colour and white closer together and sidestep the rainbow effect too. But we will not claim a colour-to-white ratio we have not published — that would be the same shortcut we are warning you about. Instead, the measurement plan is public: nine-point colour light output (R+G+B, per the IDMS 15.4 approach) read alongside nine-point white ANSI in the same standard and eco modes, with the colour-to-white ratio published on the test report with method, date and a photograph. We will also state plainly, when those figures go up, whether any brightness-boost mode was active, so the ratio is read in a directly comparable mode. This is the same discipline behind describing the panel as native 1080P (1920×1080) with 4K decoding rather than reaching for a badge it has not earned: say what the hardware actually does, then prove it.

What to ask a seller before you buy

None of this needs a lux meter of your own — it needs a couple of pointed questions. Ask for the colour light output as well as the white brightness; if only one figure is offered, assume it is the white one and the colour figure is lower. Check that any brightness claim is in ANSI (or ISO) lumens, not “LED lumens”, “light-source lumens” or an unlabelled “brightness” figure, which describe the bulb rather than the light reaching your wall. Ask which picture mode it was measured in, since the brightest mode is usually the least colour-accurate. And be wary of any listing that leads with a huge lumen count but goes quiet on colour — that silence is the tell.
